Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson for Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has died at the age of 72. Okupe passed away in Lagos in the early hours of Friday, March 7, 2025, after having been ill for some time.
Okupe, who hailed from Iperu-Remo in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, was a medical doctor before venturing into politics.
His death was confirmed by Jamiu Ashimi, the Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, and Chief Michael Adesanya, a friend of the late politician.
Throughout his career, Okupe held several prominent positions, including Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. He also served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign.
Okupe’s political career was marked by controversies, including a conviction in December 2022 for breaching money laundering regulations, which led to his resignation from Obi’s campaign.
Despite the controversies, Okupe remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics and was known for his bold political stances. In his later years, he became a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In addition to his political career, Okupe co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and was once the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC).
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described Okupe’s death as a personal loss, noting his role in Nigeria’s resistance to military rule.
