Ayra Starr, the Nigerian music sensation, is set to make her Hollywood debut in the film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, ‘Children of Blood and Bone’.
The movie, adapted from Adeyemi’s 2018 young adult romantic fantasy novel, is being produced by Lucasfilm, the studio behind Star Wars, and is scheduled for release by Paramount Pictures in the United States on January 15, 2027.
The cast includes veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), British-Nigerian basketball player Temi Fagbenle, Pamilerin Ayodeji, Shamz Garuba, Zackary Momoh, Kola Bodunde, and Saniyya Sidney.
They join a star-studded lineup led by Thuso Mbedu, who plays Zélie, along with Tosin Cole, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis.
Tomi Adeyemi, often called the next J.K. Rowling, secured a seven-figure deal with Fox Studios for the book-to-movie adaptation.
Adeyemi, the daughter of a Nigerian medical doctor, drew inspiration from her Yoruba culture to create the characters and settings within the epic tale.
The story is set in the mythical kingdom of Orïsha, where the maji once possessed powerful magic before King Saran sought to eliminate it. The story follows Zélie as she embarks on a dangerous journey with her brother Tzain and Princess Amari to restore magic, while Prince Inan is determined to stop them.
Gina Prince-Bythewood directs Children of Blood and Bone, and filming began in South Africa in February 2025
In November 2024, a casting call was sent out by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the movie director, for male and female actors between the ages of 10 and mid-20s living in Nigeria.
