In a dramatic turn of events, the Senate Committee on Public Conduct, Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.
This decision was announced during a Senate plenary session on Thursday, as the committee chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, presented what he said to be the panel’s findings.
According to committee empaneled by the Senate President who was accused by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of sexual harassment, Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of misconduct primarily due to her refusal to appear before the committee for a conduct review.
The controversy began with a heated dispute over seating arrangements with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which later escalated into allegations of sexual harassment against him.
While the Senate, at the time of filing this report, was still debating the committee’s report, some lawmakers were supporting the suspension, according to them, to maintain discipline, others on the other hand advocate for reconsideration to ensure fairness.
However, a recent court order has restrained the Senate from proceeding with disciplinary actions against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, something the committee, from all indications, ignored.
