In a bold display of defiance, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Thursday, March 6, 2025, declared: “This injustice will not be sustained,” following the Senate’s decision to suspend her for six months.
The suspension was based on a report by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, which cited Akpoti-Uduaghan for violating Senate rules.
During the plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio did not allow her to defend herself before the vote.
The suspension terms include locking her office, barring her from the National Assembly, and withholding her salary and those of her aides unless she submits a formal apology. Senator Neda Imasuen, chairman of the Ethics Committee, outlined the consequences of the suspension.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed the committee’s recommendation. While addressing the chamber, he likened the decision to disciplining a child, saying, “As Nigerians, we have a tradition; if you beat your child with the right hand, you draw that child with the left hand.”
