Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has refuted claims that the national team relies solely on star striker Victor Osimhen for success.
Speaking after Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualifiers, Ekong highlighted the collective effort of the squad, stressing that teamwork is the cornerstone of their performances.
In a recent interview, Ekong addressed the narrative that Osimhen is the team’s linchpin, particularly after his standout performances against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. “When the team plays well together, every individual shines. Even if you talk about the Rwanda game, you have to highlight more than just Osimhen’s contributions,” Ekong stated.
The PAOK defender pointed out the efforts of other players, including those who came off the bench or played out of position, such as Alhassan Yusuf.
“There are different factors at play. It’s not right to say we rely on one player because that’s not the mentality of the team. We work hard together, make everyone comfortable, and achieve more as a unit,” he added.
This statement comes amid a challenging period for the Super Eagles, who are struggling to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Despite Osimhen’s impressive form, scoring three goals in two qualifiers, the team has yet to secure a home win in the campaign.
Ekong’s comments underscore the importance of unity and shared responsibility within the squad as they aim to turn their fortunes around in upcoming matches.
