Delta Political Earthquake: How Governor Oborevwori, ex-Governor Okowa led entire PDP faction to APC

Oborevwori and Okowa

In a landmark political shift, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This mass defection marks the end of a 26-year PDP dominance in Delta State.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, in Asaba following a closed-door meeting at the Government House that lasted over six hours. Senator James Manager disclosed that all PDP members, including the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, and party executives, agreed to join the APC, describing the PDP as a “sinking boat” in need of urgent change.

The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, confirmed the defection, emphasizing that the move aims to cement ongoing development projects, enhance security, and promote the welfare of Delta residents. He said the decision reflects a strategic realignment to ensure the state’s long-term growth under the APC’s platform.

The APC has welcomed the defectors with enthusiasm, highlighting the addition of Oborevwori, Okowa, and their supporters as a significant boost to the party’s strength and grassroots network in Delta State.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described the defection as a major political development that aligns Delta State with the national agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Political analysts view this defection as a bold and strategic move that could reshape the political landscape of Delta State and the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC expressed confidence that the inclusion of these leaders will foster unity, peace, and improved governance within the party and the state.

A formal declaration ceremony welcoming the defectors into the APC is scheduled to take place soon, with Vice President Kashim Shettima expected to receive Governor Oborevwori and the PDP members into the ruling party during a rally in Asaba.

This sweeping defection signals a significant power shift in Delta State politics and underscores the growing influence of the APC across Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone
