The passing of Christian Chukwu, legendary former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, has left billionaire philanthropist Femi Otedola deeply saddened.
Reflecting on Chukwu’s remarkable legacy, Otedola expressed his shock and grief, calling him a patriot who used football as a unifying force for Nigeria.
“Christian Chukwu’s footballing career remains legendary and fully etched in the annals of our national history,” Otedola said.
He recounted his personal connection with Chukwu, particularly his intervention in 2019 when the football icon was battling prostate cancer. Otedola funded Chukwu’s medical treatment in the United Kingdom, spending over N36 million to ensure he received quality care.
“Good medical attention can give a prolonged life, and I was glad to assist Mr. Chukwu during his challenging time,” Otedola added.
Otedola’s philanthropy extended beyond Chukwu, as he has consistently supported individuals in need, including former athletes and entertainers. His generosity underscores his belief in using wealth to uplift others.
“For me, it is just my nature to give back to society,” he remarked.
Christian Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” was a towering figure in Nigerian football, leading the Super Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 and achieving continental success with Rangers International FC in 1977.
His death at age 74 marks the end of an era for Nigerian sports.
Otedola concluded his tribute by extending condolences to Chukwu’s family and fans worldwide, praying for comfort during this difficult time.
