In a swift move to alleviate the severe traffic congestion plaguing Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Works has announced the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge.
The decision, made by Minister of Works Senator David Umahi, reverses the earlier closure for maintenance and rehabilitation works, said Engr. (Mrs.) O. I. Kesha, Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, in a press release.
The bridge, which connects Ahmadu Bello Way to Marina, was initially shut down on April 1, causing significant disruptions to commuters as work and commercial activities resumed April 2 after the Sallah holiday.
Some commuters returning back from work, lamented on social media to have spent about 10 hours as a result of the gridlock. Some claimed they had to return back to their offices to pass the night as a result.
While palliative measures are underway to ensure the bridge remains motorable, major repairs will be scheduled for a later date.
The Ministry apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their understanding

PRESS RELEASE ON IMMEDIATE REOPENING OF INDEPENDENCE BRIDGE (AHMADU BELLO WAY-MARINA BOUND).
Date: April 2nd, 2025
The Honorable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos to vehicular traffic.
This directive follows the earlier closure of the bridge for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works.
Efforts are currently ongoing to ensure palliative works are carried out on the already opened bridge to make it motorable .
The Ministry hereby express regret for the inconvenience caused to the motoring public by the closure and appealed for their understanding and cooperation.
The Federal Ministry of Works clarified that the necessary repair works on the bridge would be carried out at a later time.
