Nigerian chess master and Guinness World Record holder Tunde Onakoya has been gifted a brand new Nord A9 SUV by indigenous automaker Nord Motion. The generous gift followed a friendly chess match between Onakoya and Nord Motion’s CEO, Oluwatobi Ajayi, which ended in a draw.
Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa, shared his excitement on social media, describing the Nord A9 as the most beautiful car he has ever owned and expressing deep gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. He also praised Ajayi as the “Elon of Africa” for his innovation and visionary leadership in the Nigerian automotive industry.
The gift also came with an extension of Onakoya’s ambassadorial contract with Nord Motion for another year, strengthening their partnership. This marks the second time Onakoya has received a vehicle from the company, having previously won a Nord SUV in a similar chess match last year.
Nord Motion’s CEO highlighted the shared values of innovation, discipline, and Nigerian excellence that the collaboration represents. The chess match symbolized the strategic brilliance and determination both men embody in their respective fields-chess and automotive leadership.
Onakoya’s recent achievements include setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon of 64 hours, further cementing his status as a global chess icon.
This gift not only celebrates Onakoya’s remarkable journey but also showcases the rising prominence of Nigerian innovation and talent in both sports and industry
He wrote, “Just got home to the most heartwarming surprise from my #nordmotion family - the stunning new Nord A9 SUV. Hands down the most beautiful car I’ve ever owned, but even more beautiful is the love behind this incredible gift. Grateful beyond words.
“Of course the only way to get the new car was by not losing this match.”
Onakoya revealed that the gift also came with an extension of his ambassadorial contract with the brand for another year.
He added, “I call #OluwatobiAjayiJ the “Elon” of Africa because while most people only know him for being one of the pioneers of made in Nigeria cars, he’s also a great thinker and innovator across board.
“Proud to extend our partnership as Brand Ambassador for another year. Up Naija. A beauty to behold + made in Nigeria. Thank you #nordmotion for this incredible gift,” he wrote on his social media page.
