Davido Proudly Affirms: “I Am Igbo by blood” amid tribal backlash

Nigerian music sensation David Adedeji Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has boldly affirmed his Igbo roots in response to a recent tribal post that questioned his connection with the Igbo community.

The award-winning artist made it clear that his heritage is firmly Igbo, dispelling any doubts sparked by critics targeting his association with the ethnic group.

The development was coming after an X user, @yakbel, wrote, “Davido just dey carry Ibo full body, until when dem betray am before e rest, Yoruba boy dey frolick with Ibos in 2025, they want your head and everything you have to belong to them, you can never satisfy Ibos ooo, IBOs are not people you surround yourself with as a Yoruba man.”

Davido replying to the post on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, simply wrote, “lol I AM IGBO by blood.”

Davido’s connection to Igbo culture goes beyond music. His wife, Chioma Rowland, hails from Imo State, and his late paternal grandmother, Esther Nnena Adeleke (née Akparah), was also of Igbo descent.

The user’s comments followed Davido’s recent public meeting with veteran highlife musician Bright Chimezie in Lagos.

In videos shared on Instagram on Monday, the Afrobeats superstar was seen warmly interacting with the music icon, famed for his energetic “Zigima” sound.

“I got inspiration from your song, God bless you,” Davido said during the call, which was posted by nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest.

The encounter came shortly after the two had a video call in which Davido paid tribute to Chimezie. He credited Chimezie’s track “Because of English” as the inspiration behind his own newly released song “With You” featuring Omah Lay.
