Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), a well-known Nigerian social media influencer, was arrested by Nigerian police in Abuja on Friday, May 2, 2025.
The arrest occurred at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch following VDM’s public outcry over multiple unauthorized deductions from his mother’s bank account.
VDM had visited the GTBank branch in Area 3, Abuja, to seek explanations for repeated debits labeled as loan repayments-loans his mother insists she never took. He and his mother requested detailed bank statements to clarify the suspicious transactions, which reportedly happened more than seven times within the year.
His lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the arrest on Twitter, condemning the action as unacceptable and emphasizing that demanding accountability is not a crime.
Adeyanju revealed that VDM was arrested alongside a friend, C Park, while his mother was left alone. He also threatened legal action against GTBank and the security agencies involved if VDM was not released promptly.
“JUST IN: VDM arrested by the police at GTB. Spoke to them before he was arrested. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime,” Adeyanju tweeted.
In another update, he added, “A team of policemen arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone.”
The incident has sparked public debate, with many supporting VDM’s demand for transparency and justice, while others question the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The Nigerian Police Force and GTBank have yet to issue official statements regarding the matter.
This arrest follows a pattern of confrontations between GTBank and customers alleging unauthorized transactions, highlighting ongoing concerns about banking transparency and customer rights in Nigeria.
