The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has made a significant stride in promoting inclusivity by enrolling and issuing National Identification Numbers (NINs) to 59,786 inmates across correctional facilities nationwide.
This milestone was achieved through a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), ensuring that even those behind bars are not left out of the national identity system.
This groundbreaking initiative is a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to provide every Nigerian and legal resident with a recognized identity.
By focusing on ward enrolment, NIMC demonstrates its commitment to leaving no one behind in the country’s drive for comprehensive digital identification.
Through this effort, inmates can gain access to essential services and opportunities that require official identification, reinforcing the government’s dedication to inclusivity and social reintegration.
A press release signed by Kayode Adegoke (Ph.D), Head, Corporate Communications unit of NIMC on Monday, June 9, 2025 says
to date, 74 per cent of inmates have been enrolled and issued NINs, with the remaining inmates to be enrolled in the ongoing inmate enrollment.
The press release adds that NIMC appreciates the support of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Comptroller-General, Mr. Nwakuche Ndidi, and the NCoS management and staff.
NIMC, it also added, is set to commence ward-level enrollment across the country, a key component of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen the National Identity System.
NIMC DG/CEO, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote on her part, emphasised that the Commission aims to work with strategic partners to enroll and issue NINs to all Nigerians and legal residents in every ward, ensuring no one is left out.
