Super Falcons during the hospital visit |
In a touching show of sportsmanship and unity, players from Nigeria’s Super Falcons visited Gabriela Salgado, the South African Banyana Banyana forward who recently suffered a serious leg injury during their TotalEnergies WAFCON 2024 semi final match between Nigeria and South Africa.
Salgado fractured the mid-shaft of her left leg in the match against Nigeria and was immediately taken to the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca. She underwent successful surgery and is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year.

When the injury was sustained |
Following her stabilization, the entire Banyana Banyana squad visited Salgado at the hospital on Tuesday night, July 22, after the match to offer their support. The next day, members of the Nigerian Super Falcons team came to see her and presented Salgado with a signed Super Falcons jersey, symbolizing solidarity and goodwill between the two African football powerhouses.
The gesture highlights the camaraderie and mutual respect shared among Africa’s women football teams, despite fierce rivalry on the pitch. Both teams have sent their best wishes for Salgado’s speedy recovery as she begins her journey to full fitness.
This moment is a reminder of the spirit of unity that defines the TotalEnergies WAFCON tournament, extending beyond competition to friendship and support during difficult times.
