The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal on allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion.
Tambuwal, who currently serves as a senator representing Sokoto South, was reportedly taken into custody upon his arrival at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025.
The ex-governor, also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, reports say, is currently undergoing questioning by the anti-corruption agency in relation to the massive withdrawals, which reportedly violate the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.
As of press time, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not issued an official statement regarding the arrest.
Tambuwal governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023 and was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015. The investigation into his activities continues.
