Nigeria has carved its name into the history books by becoming the first-ever nation to secure five consecutive Women’s AfroBasket championships, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball like never before.
This remarkable achievement comes just days after Nigeria also claimed the African crown in women’s football, marking a sensational week where the country stands as the reigning champion in two major women’s sports on the continent.
In a hard-fought final against a tenacious Mali squad at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket, Nigeria emerged victorious with a 78-64 triumph. The win wasn’t easy as Mali led the first quarter 26-21 and matched Nigeria’s resolve with equal second and third quarters, pushing the contest into a nail-biting fourth quarter.
But Nigeria’s determination shone through in the final period with a dominant 17-8 run that sealed their historic victory.
This win also extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the tournament to an astounding 29 games, a streak extending back to the 2015 Women’s AfroBasket third-place game in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Despite a slow start in the final, Nigeria’s coach Rena Wakama and her team rallied at halftime, heading into the break tied 41-41, and then powered through the second half to claim their record-breaking title.
