Tinubu touches down in Tokyo ahead of TICAD9, eyes stronger Nigeria-Japan ties

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Tokyo, Japan, in the early hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), scheduled to take place in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.

Landing at Haneda Airport around 1 a.m., President Tinubu was warmly welcomed by Japan’s Ambassador for TICAD, Hideo Matsubara, marking the beginning of a crucial diplomatic mission.


Beyond attending the main conference sessions, Tinubu is set to hold bilateral talks and meet with top executives from Japanese companies investing in Nigeria, aiming to strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations, according to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Following his engagements in Japan, President Tinubu will travel to Brasília for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25 at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, further expanding Nigeria’s international partnerships, Presidency explains
