World record holder Tobi Amusan sprinted to a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, running a strong 12.29 seconds to secure Nigeria’s first medal of the meet.
Although Amusan had a sluggish start off the blocks, her fierce determination and powerful finish nearly clinched gold.
Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji edged her out, setting a national record with 12.24 seconds to claim the top spot. Grace Stark from the USA took bronze with 12.34 seconds, while Olympic champion Masai Russell just missed the podium, finishing fourth in 12.44 seconds.
Other finalists put in impressive performances too, including Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, both clocking season bests of 12.49 seconds. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams followed closely in 12.53 seconds, with Netherlands’ Nadine Visser rounding out the final in 12.56 seconds.
Amusan’s silver medal confirms her elite status and kicks off Nigeria’s campaign at Tokyo with a bang. By her achievement, she gives Nigeria a strong start on the medal table in Tokyo.
