Anticipation soared on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as Lagos prepared to host Africa’s first all-electric powerboat race.
Rodi Basso, CEO of the E1 Series, joined top Lagos State Government officials for an exclusive media briefing at the Black Diamond Hotel.
The event attracted prominent journalists, digital influencers, and media experts, who gathered to discuss the groundbreaking championship set to put Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa at the forefront of sustainable motorsport innovation.
The briefing comes as the city counts down to hosting the E1 Lagos GP from October 2–5, 2025, a landmark event that will place Lagos alongside iconic host cities such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah.
Speaking at the event, Rodi Basso, CEO of E1, said “Lagos is more than just a host city; it is the heartbeat of Africa’s innovation, energy, and resilience. Bringing E1 here is not only about racing; it’s about creating a new legacy of clean technology, sustainability, and opportunity for the next generation. We are proud to work with Lagos in setting a standard for what the future of marine sport can be.”
Representing Lagos State, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Samuel Egube, alongside the
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, and the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, reaffirmed government’s shared vision for the event. They noted that E1 is more than a sporting spectacle - it is a global statement.
“As a government, we see in E1 the alignment of sport, innovation, and sustainability. The E1 Lagos GP is not just a race; it is a statement of what Lagos stands for - inclusion, creativity, and
excellence. Together, we are placing our city on the world stage as the true Centre of Excellence and Aquatic Splendour,” they stated.
The media briefing also provided opportunities for direct interactions as journalists explored the championship’s impact on Lagos in terms of tourism, economic growth, job creation, and sustainability initiatives.
The E1 Lagos GP will feature celebrity-owned teams led by global icons such as Didier Drogba, Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, and Virat Kohli, competing in high-speed, 100% electric RaceBird boats.
As the only African stop on the championship calendar, Lagos will host a sporting and cultural experience never before seen on African waters, organizers said.
With just weeks to go, anticipation continues to build as Lagos prepares to welcome the world to its waters with a championship that blends speed, culture, and sustainability.
