On Monday, October 20, at the Presidential Villa, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima welcomed a delegation from PLAN International, led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, Director of Programme, Quality and Innovation.
During the meeting, Vice President Shettima invited a remarkable teenager, Joy Ogah, to symbolically take over his role as Vice President for a day and address the nation.
In his remarks, Shettima emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s firm commitment to advancing girl-child education across Nigeria, highlighting plans to strengthen collaboration with PLAN International.
“We will continue our engagement with PLAN International and explore how the force and strength of government can be brought to bear on your solid advice regarding girl-child education,” he stated.
The symbolic handover to Joy Ogah sends a powerful message about Nigeria’s drive to empower young girls through education and leadership opportunities, aiming to inspire a new generation of female leaders.
PLAN International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation founded in the United Kingdom in 1937.
It operates in more than 80 countries, including Nigeria, working to advance children’s rights and promote equality for girls. The organisation empowers children from birth to adulthood, helping them prepare for and respond to crises and adversity, and drives change in practice and policy at local, national, and global levels.
Its core areas of work, Newsmart learnt, include, children’s rights and equality for girls; promoting access to education; disaster preparedness and recovery; humanitarian assistance and community development; supporting children and girls to realize their rights and potential.
The organization collaborates with governments, partners, and communities, striving to tackle the root causes of poverty, violence, exclusion, and discrimination, with a special focus on supporting girls who are often most affected by these challenges.
