Former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has sharply criticized the current Federal Government for its handling of the escalating insecurity in Nigeria.
Writing on his social media page on the recent surge of terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and violent incidents across multiple states, Amaechi condemned what he described as the government’s lack of political will to protect its citizens.
Amaechi highlighted the government’s failure to provide adequate security as “evidenced by the surge in terrorist attacks and mass kidnappings,” warning that this neglect has only emboldened terrorists and eroded public trust. He cited multiple violent incidents within one week, including attacks in Plateau, the kidnapping of secondary schoolgirls in Kebbi, the ambush in Borno that led to the abduction and killing of Brigadier General M. Uba, a church attack in Kwara, and the kidnapping of Rev. Fr. Bobbo Paschal in Kaduna.
Calling on the Federal Government to “step up its game” with strengthened military intelligence, sharper tactical operations, and greater accountability, Amaechi stressed that the President’s foremost duty is the security of lives and properties. He criticized the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s perceived inaction, emphasizing that “enough of looking the other way or issuing watery statements of condemnation” while Nigerians continue to suffer.
Amaechi also questioned the President’s priorities, criticizing attendance at summits or foreign trips amid heightened insecurity at home. He urged the leadership to probe past wrong decisions, strategize effectively, and make the tough calls necessary to restore peace.
Drawing on his experience, Amaechi recalled how Rivers State overcame security challenges and offered the Federal Government assistance, stating, “We did it in Rivers State; it can be done in the country. We are prepared to help if you request help.”
His comments add to growing pressure on the government to urgently address Nigeria’s national security crisis with decisive and accountable leadership.
