Reports now have it that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was safely escorted out of Guinea-Bissau by military personnel following a sudden coup in the West African nation.
Jonathan had been in Guinea-Bissau as part of a joint election observer mission coordinated by the African Union, ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum.
The coup erupted after both President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition leader Fernando Dias claimed victory in Sunday’s presidential election, despite no official results being announced.
In response, military forces suspended the electoral process, closed all borders, and imposed a nationwide curfew.
Amid the escalating instability, soldiers are reported to have provided protection to Jonathan and facilitated his departure from the country.
Back home, Nigeria’s House of Representatives had called on the government to use all diplomatic channels to ensure Jonathan’s safe return, as well as to assist other Nigerians stranded in Guinea-Bissau due to the crisis.
The military declared “total control” on November 26, intensifying political uncertainty in Guinea-Bissau as the nation grapples with the fallout from the disputed election.
