President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, to immediately relocate to Kebbi State following the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from a government secondary school in the state.
Matawalle, who previously served as governor of Zamfara State, has been tasked with closely overseeing security efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted girls.
The attack happened around 4 a.m. on Monday. November 17, 2025 at Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town, Kebbi State.
Armed gunmen arrived on motorcycles, stormed the school premises through nearby forests, and abducted the students. During the assault, the school’s vice principal and a security guard were fatally shot after resisting the attackers.
Security forces, including police and military units, have been deployed to the area and surrounding forests to rescue the girls and intensify the search efforts.
This incident marks the second major school abduction in Kebbi within the last four years, highlighting persistent security challenges in the region
Matawalle, who is expected to arrive in Birni-Kebbi on Friday, November 21, 2025, gained some experience in dealing with banditry and mass kidnapping during his tenure as governor of Zamfara State from 2019 to 2023.
On 26 February 2021, armed bandits abducted 279 female students aged between 10 and 17 at the Government Girls Science Secondary School, a boarding school in Jangebe, in Zamfara State. The bandits released all the hostages on March 2, 2021.
President Tinubu had postponed his scheduled trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as he awaited further security briefings on the kidnapped Kebbi schoolgirls and the attack on Christ Apostolic Church worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State, a press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), said.
