Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian soldiers detained for nearly two weeks following a forced landing of their aircraft in the Sahelian nation.
The breakthrough came after President Bola Tinubu dispatched Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar to meet Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traoré, on Wednesday.
Tuggar’s spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, confirmed in a statement that both sides resolved the matter amicably regarding the Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew.
The detention stemmed from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) labeling the landing an “unfriendly act” in violation of international law. However, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) explained that a technical issue prompted a precautionary landing at the nearest airfield in Bobo-Dioulasso, fully compliant with standard safety procedures and global aviation protocols.
During the talks, Tuggar conveyed Tinubu’s message of solidarity and fraternity to Traoré. The leaders also explored ways to deepen bilateral ties and bolster integration within their regional bloc.
