| Gen Musa takes oath of office |
On Thursday, December 4, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially inducted retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
General Musa steps into the role following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar earlier that week on December 1. The President swiftly nominated Musa on December 2, and the Senate fast-tracked his confirmation, underscoring the urgency of strengthening the nation’s security apparatus, according to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Born in Sokoto in 1967, General Musa began his military career in 1991 as a second lieutenant. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff in 2023 under President Tinubu.
He retired from active service in October 2025 but leaves behind a legacy marked by his efforts to enhance coordination among Nigeria’s military branches.
As he takes on his new ministerial duties, General Musa faces the critical task of consolidating recent security advancements and driving reforms aimed at ensuring long-term peace and stability across the country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Sen. Adeniyi Adegbonmire, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Also in attendance were the spouse of the new Minister, Mrs Lilian Oghogho Musa; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah; and Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs (rtd).
