In a stunning revelation, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed a foiled coup plot targeting President Bola Tinubu, vowing to arraign the suspects before military courts.
The announcement on Monday, January 26, 2026, by Director of Defence Information Samaila Uba, follows months of swirling rumors sparked by the abrupt cancellation of the nation’s 65th independence anniversary parade in October 2025.
Initially dismissed by DHQ, the plot involved at least 16 arrested officers, with two still at large, uncovered through rigorous military investigations.
This development ends weeks of speculation and underscores ongoing vigilance against threats to the government.
In a statement, the DHQ says: “The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement reads.
“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.
“The findings have identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.
“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
“This ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.”
The defence spokesperson said the actions being taken against the affected officers are “purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks”.
Uba said the armed forces remain resolute in maintaining the “highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority”.
