The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, adjourned the arraignment of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to April 23 after his defense team failed to produce him in court.
El-Rufai faces a three-count charge from the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly wire-tapping the phone of National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu.
Defense counsel Oluwole Iyamu informed Justice Joyce Abdumalik that El-Rufai was in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), preventing his appearance. Iyamu requested an adjournment for production and urged the court to hear a bail application, noting the prosecution’s indication it wouldn’t oppose bail since the offenses are bailable.
Prosecutor Oluwole Aladedoye countered that bail was premature without formal arraignment.
In a short ruling, Justice Abdumalik agreed, deeming the bail request untimely. The court fixed April 23, 2026, for the arraignment.
