Emmanuel Nweke, media aide to Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), had revealed that his principal collapsed on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, right outside his office.
According to Nweke’s statement, as reported by TheCable, Maina lost his balance while entering the office, struck his head on the staircase, and passed out.
The aide blamed the fall on an “untreated knee injury” that Maina has been enduring.
“The incident occurred following complications arising from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase,” the statement reads.
“Medical personnel present promptly administered first aid, after which he was rushed to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention.
“Dr. Maina is currently receiving close medical care and remains under observation.
“Following preliminary medical assessment, one of the attending doctors advised that arrangements be considered for an air ambulance medical evacuation should his condition not stabilise within a short period.
“His family and medical team are closely monitoring his progress. The family appeals to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for privacy at this critical time.”
Maina had just been released from Kuje Prison after serving time for his conviction in a massive pension fraud case.
In November 2021, an Abuja federal high court found him guilty of money laundering over N2 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned him in October 2019 on a 12-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Trial judge Okon Abang ruled that Maina stole more than N2 billion from pensioners, “most of whom have died without reaping the fruits of their labour.”
The Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and eight-year sentence in May 2023.
During his lower court trial, prison wardens once wheeled him into the courtroom. The court had ordered the deputy comptroller of the correctional service to personally assess Maina’s health.
In December 2020, the former pension boss slumped right there in court.
