The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed flight operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport following a brief disruption from a fire incident.
Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs, confirmed in a statement that the airspace closure was short-lived. To enhance operations, FAAN has also established a remote tower at the Lagos facility.
“It was just for a short period. Once the fire was contained, the operations started. Planes have been flying in and leaving,” Agbebire told TheCable.
Meanwhile, Air Peace, Nigeria and West Africa’s largest airline has expressed regret to their valued customers and the public on the inconveniences the development must have caused them.
“We truly understand how this affects you and appreciate your patience, the management of Air Peace airline said in a press release, adding, “our team is working hand-in-hand with airport authorities to resolve this quickly, with passenger safety and smooth operations always our top priorities.”
The airline thanked customers and public for understanding and trust, and promised to share updates as soon as they have confirmations.
On another hand and while speaking to journalists, on the development, Olubunmi Kuku, managing director (MD) of FAAN, confirmed the agency had begun setting up a remote control tower to restore operations.
“That remote tower should be up in the next 20 minutes, and we will be back to our operations,” she said.
“So we should have flights departing and arriving very shortly, as soon as that is set up.”
Kuku added that FAAN is activating contingency plans, including a temporary terminal outside the Airport Operations Centre (AOC).
“That should be up and running in the next couple of days,” the FAAN boss noted.
She expressed appreciation for the coordinated response to the incident, with support from both federal and state authorities.
Agencies involved, according to Kuku, include the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Nigerian Air Force, police, and other security and safety outfits.
FAAN had temporarily closed the airspace after a fire at Terminal One of the Lagos airport, in line with established safety protocols.
