In a stunning political shake-up, Adamawa State Governor Ahmad Umaru Fintiri has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), taking his entire cabinet, key appointees, and all elected local government chairmen with him.
Fintiri broke the news during a statewide broadcast on Friday, February 27, 2026, framing the move as a bold step for Adamawa’s progress and national unity.
“This decision aligns us more closely with the Federal Government to drive our development priorities,” he declared, prioritizing the state’s interests above party lines.
The defection wave gained momentum earlier this week when Adamawa State House of Assembly Speaker Wesley Bathiya quit the PDP on Wednesday, joined by 14 fellow lawmakers, signaling deepening cracks in the party’s regional stronghold.
The Speaker made the announcement during plenary, presenting letters of resignation from the affected members.
After concluding legislative business, he called for order and read the letters of withdrawal one after another, confirming their exit from the ruling party.
One of the defecting lawmakers, Mahmud Kallamu, chairman of the House Committee on Information, described the move as strategic.
An APC lawmaker, speaking on the sidelines, said the party would welcome the defectors if they chose to join.
