At least 24 residents lay dead after gunmen stormed Kirchinga village in Adamawa State’s Madagali Local Government Area on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
The attackers torched homes, shops, and places of worship, leaving survivors injured and communities in ruins. Bodies littered the streets, with smoldering buildings still burning hours later and several people missing.
Amnesty International swiftly condemned the “horrifying” assault in a statement that day. Though Boko Haram hasn’t claimed responsibility, the group noted the attack’s pattern matches the terrorists’ signature, based on survivor accounts.
Amnesty urged Nigerian authorities to bolster protections for civilians and swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
Adamawa State Police spokesperson Suleiman Nguroje confirmed that Commissioner Dankombo Morris visited the site Tuesday for an on-the-spot assessment.
Nguroje said the commissioner led a team of senior officers to review deployments and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies, particularly the military.
He was received by the emir of Madagali and the chairman of the LGA, and held discussions with members of the affected communities, including Shuawari Kirchinga ward.
The police chief commiserated with residents and assured them of efforts to restore peace and enhance security presence in the area.
When contacted, Nguroje told TheCable that the number of casualties had yet to be ascertained, and that further updates would be provided as soon as possible.
Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa, according to TheCable report, has vowed justice for the victims, noting that his administration will not surrender to fear.
The attack comes a few days after suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed three people in Garaha district, Hong LGA of the state.
