President Bola Tinubu has swiftly ordered an army battalion into Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, following a brutal overnight Boko Haram attack that slaughtered innocent villagers in Worro.
In a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President announced the new military command will lead Operation Savannah Shield to crush the terrorists and safeguard vulnerable communities.
Tinubu fiercely condemned the “cowardly and beastly” assault, slamming the gunmen as heartless killers who target defenseless civilians in their reign of terror.
The statement noted that President Tinubu expressed rage that the attackers killed the community members who rejected their obnoxious attempt at indoctrination, choosing instead to practice Islam that is neither extreme nor violent.
"It's commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue," he said.
The President urged collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide succour to members of the community and ensure those who committed the atrocities do not go scot-free.
President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and condoled with those who lost family members. He also condoled with the people and the government of Kwara State.
In a related development, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the area late Wednesday night, February 4, 2026, alongside service chiefs. He described the massacre as a targeted attack on “local Muslims who refused to surrender to extremists preaching a strange doctrine.”
Addressing the Emir of Kaiama’s palace, the governor condemned the killings as a “cowardly expression of frustration” by terrorist cells amid ongoing counterterrorism operations. He explained that the victims’ refusal to adopt the extremists’ teachings sparked the violence.
“We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects (now said to be over 100). May Allah grant them aljana Firdaus,” AbdulRazaq said. “From the information I’ve been getting, this village refuses to succumb to a perverted form of Islamic doctrine. These villagers don’t want any alteration. And because they refused to change doctrine in their faith, they were attacked and massacred.”
He contrasted it with typical incidents: “It’s different from what we used to see, where subjects are kidnapped or ransacked. But this was just a pure massacre. And it’s something truly condemned.”
This ranks as one of Kwara State’s deadliest attacks this year, coming after late-2025 bandit raids and kidnappings that have heightened fears of violence spreading south from Nigeria’s northwest hotspots.
