Armed gunmen ambushed a security team in Kebbi’s Shanga Local Government Area, killing one police officer and nine soldiers in a brutal attack, according to reports.
The incident unfolded in the Giro Masa community, where operatives had been tracking the gunmen to a construction company yard based on resident tip-offs.
Soldiers rushed to secure the site but were hit hard en route to the location.
The savage assault claimed the lives of the police officer and nine soldiers, with two military trucks reportedly torched in the chaos.
Governor Nasir Idris raced to the accident and emergency unit at Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi to visit the wounded.
Speaking to journalists afterward, he called the attack “unfortunate,” vowing that the state would foot the medical bills for survivors and support the families of the fallen heroes.
“Everybody knows that government of Kebbi doesn’t play with security issues. We are here, we have seen things by ourselves. And we have directed the CMD of the hospital to ensure they do the needful for those that are receiving treatment,” he said.
“And at the same time, for those that lost their life, the government of Kebbi will do everything possible to assist the family. It is a great loss and it is a very sad situation. But we have to accept what has happened in good faith.”
