The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is doubling down on its Green Telecoms Initiative to steer Nigeria’s digital infrastructure toward eco-friendly technologies, aligning with global sustainability standards.
This bold move promises up to 50% cost reductions for telecom operators while fostering greener operations across the sector.
At the recent Green Conference, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by Head of Projects, Mr. Shuaibu Swade, highlighted how green telecoms positions Nigeria’s industry at the vital crossroads of connectivity and environmental stewardship.
Embracing these practices, he said, will unlock massive savings and a healthier planet.
“As a telecommunications regulator, we stand at the intersection of connectivity and sustainability. Telecommunications is the backbone of the digital economy, but it must also become a backbone of environmental responsibility,” he said.
He added that expanding digital infrastructure across the country presents both opportunities and obligations for operators to reduce carbon emissions through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and renewable-powered base stations.
The NCC has outlined a key strategy for the initiative: urging telecom operators to swap carbon-heavy generators for renewable energy sources. This shift, the Commission says, could slash operating costs by 30 to 50 percent.
Swade spotlighted additional priorities, such as infrastructure sharing among operators, scaling up renewable power for telecom towers, and better handling of e-waste from digital gear.
The NCC is also ramping up Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting standards across the telecom sector to boost transparency and accountability in sustainability efforts.
According to the Commission, digital tech can curb emissions by powering remote work, seamless digital services, and smart solutions that cut down on travel and other high-carbon activities.
Conference stakeholders echoed that green telecom networks deliver dual wins - environmental protection and economic gains. They cut costs, build tougher networks, and extend reliable connectivity to underserved rural areas.
The NCC reiterated that the future of connectivity must be environmentally sustainable, urging industry players to embrace green solutions as a matter of urgency.
