President Bola Tinubu received a full ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle today, March 18, 2026, kicking off his landmark state visit to the United Kingdom - the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.
Accompanied by his wife, Oluremi, Tinubu was honored with a resounding 42-gun salute from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.
The Nigerian first family was first greeted by Prince William and Princess Catherine, who then presented them to King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Charles will host Tinubu and Oluremi at the royal residence for the two-day visit.
There will also be exchanges of gifts and displays of items related to Nigeria that are kept in the Royal Collection, before an opulent state banquet in St George’s Hall.
At the banquet, which will hold in the evening, Charles and Tinubu will both give speeches. The event will be attended by political leaders and celebrities with links to Nigeria.
However, there will be no traditional lunch with the king at Windsor as Tinubu, who is a Muslim, is fasting for Ramadan, TheCable reports.
It also added that Tinubu and Oluremi will also lay a wreath of flowers on the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II, in St George’s Chapel.
In addition, the couple will meet with organisations engaged in interfaith dialogue as the Nigerian leader faces pressure to tackle insecurity in the country, which US officials say affects Christians disproportionately.
Recall that on Monday, March 16, 2026, suspected terrorists detonated bombs, hitting a main market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover.
The Borno state police command said 23 persons have been confirmed dead, with 108 injured.
Tinubu mourned those who lost their lives and directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri.
