Abuja erupted on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as a powerhouse coalition of Nigerian political giants descended on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters for the fiery ‘Occupy INEC’ demonstration.
Leading the charge was former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, alongside African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman and ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
They were joined by 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and ex-senator Dino Melaye, among others
Organized by ADC leaders, the protest slammed INEC for alleged partisanship, demanding accountability ahead of future elections.
Atiku had announced the action earlier via a post on X, rallying opposition voices against electoral flaws.
“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire,” he said.
“Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship.”
Protesters at the venue repeatedly chanted “Ojoro”, while holding placards and banners with inscriptions like ‘Tinubu, why are you afraid?’, ‘Judges must give justice’, ‘Tinubu, let democracy breathe’.
The protest comes in the wake of INEC’s de-recognition of the ADC leadership following a court of appeal verdict.
