The African Democratic Congress (ADC) wrapped up its electrifying national convention in Abuja on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as delegates overwhelmingly approved constitutional amendments and ratified a new National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President David Mark.
Emeka Ihedioha, ex-governor of Imo State and chairman of the electoral sub-committee, announced the vote results. He revealed that 1,576 delegates were accredited, with 11 votes voided. Ihedioha added that 1,471 delegates voted in favor of the amendments – a whopping 94% support.
“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention,” he declared.
Olumide Akpata, chairman of the legal and convention processes committee, earlier oversaw the ratification of resolutions from the party’s 97th, 98th, and 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) moved the motion for adoption, while Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT) proposed ratifying the 100th NEC meeting held on March 25, 2026, covering the party manifesto and nationwide congresses. Both passed by voice vote.
National Organizing Secretary Chinedu Idigo highlighted key resolutions: waiving membership requirements, suspending zoning for executive offices, and halting rules mandating zonal replacements for vacancies.
In closing, Mark hailed the event as “one of the best” conventions he had attended, signaling a bold new chapter for ADC.
“Today marks the beginning of our journey to the villa and all of you are part of this history,” he said.
Earlier, the party expelled Nafiu Bala, former national deputy chairman, over alleged anti-party activities.
The party also expelled several members, including Leke Abejide, a member of the house of representatives, Elias Adiukeu, Kenneth Ehiator, Kingsley Temitope, Obinna Norman, Kennedy Odiong, and Stella Chukwuma.
