Nigeria took a bold step toward a more connected digital era with the official inauguration of the National Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Council at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.
The high-profile event brought together key figures from telecom regulation, tech governance, and industry leadership.
Leading the lineup were Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Engr. Abraham Oshadami, NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services; and Barr. Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management.
Other dignitaries included Tony Emoekpere and Dr. Chris Uwaje from the IPv6 Council, Mr. Muhammed Rudman as National President of the IPv6 Council, and Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, President of the National Internet Registration Association (NIRA) and IPv6 Council Member.
The council’s formation signals NCC’s push to transition Nigeria to IPv6, the next-generation internet protocol designed to handle the explosive growth of internet-connected devices amid rising demand for faster, more secure online services.
Experts say this move positions Nigeria to avoid address shortages plaguing IPv4 and unlock innovations in 5G, IoT, and smart cities.
NCC, by the development, emphasized the council’s role in driving adoption across stakeholders, ensuring seamless implementation nationwide.
As Nigeria, undoubtedly Africa’s largest economy ramps up its digital economy agenda, the IPv6 Council promises to bridge infrastructure gaps and boost competitiveness on the global stage.
