President Bola Tinubu has removed Saidu Mohammed as Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Tinubu also nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar to replace him, pending Senate approval.
The move was announced Wednesday, April 29, 2026, via a State House press release from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the removal of Mr Saidu Mohammed as the Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in the public interest,” Onanuga said.
The decision aligns with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 to boost regulatory strength in the midstream and downstream petroleum sectors under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Umar brings over 25 years of expertise in energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure. He earned an Accounting degree from Bayero University and trained at Harvard Business School.
Until Senate confirmation, NMDPRA’s most senior official will act as head.
The Presidency expressed gratitude to Mohammed for his service, wished him well, and reaffirmed its focus on installing capable leaders in vital regulatory roles.
“The President remains committed to ensuring capable leadership in key regulatory institutions to advance energy security, sector reform, and sustainable economic growth,” the statement added.
The change in leadership at the NMDPRA followed the exit of its pioneer Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, who stepped aside in December 2025.
He was subsequently replaced by Saidu Mohammed, who assumed office as Authority Chief Executive of the NMDPRA.
