World record holder Tobi Amusan delivered a masterclass at the African Athletics Championships in Ghana, storming to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal of the tournament.
Her compatriot, US-based hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo, grabbed bronze in third place for her debut individual medal, while Ashley Miller snatched silver to deny Nigeria a 1-2 finish.
Official times remained unavailable due to ongoing organizational glitches, including a faulty timing system, missing live results, incomplete data without wind readings, and erratic disqualifications that sparked backlash from athletes and fans.
Amusan, however, was untouchable, posting the fastest times in the heats and semis before sealing her dominance in the final.
This hurdles double boosts Nigeria’s medal tally to four, with the men’s and women’s 100m finals set for later Wednesday evening.
Nigeria kicked off strongly on Tuesday at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, as Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi claimed silver and bronze in the women’s discus.
Oladipo, making her international debut for Nigeria after switching from Great Britain, shone brightly on the big stage, with Amaechi rounding out the podium.
