Suspected bandits stormed Yashikira in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Monday, setting the Emir’s palace on fire and abducting several residents, including women and children.
Witnesses said heavily armed attackers descended on the border community late at night, firing sporadically and moving through the town for hours.
The gunmen attacked the royal residence, ignited parts of the palace, then forcibly took multiple people before disappearing into the darkness.
Residents described the raid as terrifying and said the community was caught off guard, with little or no immediate resistance. The invasion left households traumatised and parts of the town damaged.
Local sources told Channels Television the assailants operated with apparent ease, compounding fear among villagers.
State security agencies have not yet released an official statement. Efforts to confirm casualty and abduction numbers are ongoing as relatives and local authorities search for the missing and assess the damage.
Sources say security forces have launched immediate rescue operations to free victims of the Yashikira abduction, which occurred on Sunday night.
Military and police operatives have established a cordon in the area as part of the efforts to rescue about 10 persons who were reportedly taken from the community in an overnight attack on the palace of the Emir of Yashikira, the report says.
The attackers also sought to raid the local police stations but were reportedly repelled.
The development, it states, comes after bandits on Saturday night invaded a prayer ground at Ori-Oke Ajaiye, on the outskirts of Ikiran village in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three worshippers and abducting 15 others during a vigil.
