Peter Obi’s media team has dismissed as “entirely false” a widely shared breakdown purporting that the former Labour Party presidential candidate received 45 million votes in a supposed primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement signed by Ibrahim Umar, spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Office, the team said the circulating figures were fabricated and that no such primary ever took place.
“The attention of the Peter Obi Media Office has been drawn to certain 45m primary vote figures currently circulating on social media and various news platforms, purporting to be the breakdown of official results from an imaginary primary by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC ascribed to Mr Peter Obi,” the statement reads.
Umar urged the public, party supporters, and members of the press to disregard the misleading statistics and warned that those distributing the fraudulent figures are seeking “partners in their fraud.”
He added that official updates about Mr. Obi’s engagements and political processes will only be released through the media office’s verified and authorised channels and will bear appropriate signatures.
The rebuttal arrives amid increasing concern about the use of doctored documents and false social-media claims in Nigeria’s political discourse. Analysts say such fabrications can distort public debate, inflame partisan tensions, and damage the reputations of political figures.
By formally denying the attribution, the Peter Obi team aims both to protect his public standing and to signal that it will rely on established channels to communicate official developments.
The media office did not name the sources of the false figures or identify who circulated them; it only called on would‑be fraudsters to “look elsewhere.”
The statement was dated 26 May 2026 and reflects escalating scrutiny of online misinformation as Nigeria approaches another critical electoral cycle.
