Wasila Isma’il, a celebrated figure in Kannywood, has died at 46 after a prolonged illness, the film community confirmed on Sunday.
Reports making the rounds to the effect say her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, announced her passing on social media, saying, “Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihirrajiun. Wasila Isma’il is dead. She died at the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria Hospital, Kaduna.”
According to Chiroma, she breathed her last after battling the long-term ailment and is survived by her children.
Wasila rose to prominence in the Hausa film industry after beginning her acting career in 1998 with a role in Jinin Masoya. Her breakthrough came the following year when she played the lead in Wasila, directed by Yakubu Lere and starring opposite top actor Ali Nuhu. The film’s success transformed the Kaduna-born actress into a household name across northern Nigeria, the report says.
In a past interview, Wasila said the movie was originally intended to be titled Jamila, but she successfully requested the change — a decision that would eventually cement her legacy in the industry, the report notes.
“I didn’t like the name Jamila because I feared it might tarnish my name, so I asked for it to be changed, and the director agreed,” she had said.
As word of her departure spread, movie lovers and fellow industry practitioners flooded social media platforms to express their grief, honoring her as a gifted performer whose footprints in the Hausa cinema space will remain unforgettable.
Her death marks the loss of one of Kannywood’s influential performers, remembered for her on-screen presence and the impact of her early hit roles.
