Niniola Mourns Husband: ‘God took him’ after 13 years together

Nigerian afro-house star Niniola Apata has announced the death of her husband, Michael Ndika.

The Grammy-nominated singer broke the news in a series of emotional Instagram posts early Wednesday, May 20, 2026, writing plainly, “God took him,” and adding, “My husband died.”

In a subsequent post she mourned the loss of their 13-year relationship, writing, “God took him. 13 years. 13 f***ing years.”

Ndika served as CEO of NaijaReview, a multimedia platform focused on afro-house and contemporary African music. Details surrounding his death have not been released; Niniola has long kept her private life largely out of the public eye.

Niniola, 39, first rose to prominence after winning Project Fame West Africa in 2013 and has since become one of Nigeria’s most recognised music exports.

Her 2017 single “Maradona” earned international attention and led to collaborations and endorsements from artists such as DJ Snake, Drake, Timbaland, and Beyoncé.
