Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, held talks with US Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, on Tuesday May 5, 2026, zeroing in on credible elections, opposition strength, and Nigeria’s democratic future ahead of the 2027 polls.
Obi shared details on his X account, highlighting their focus on bolstering US-Nigeria ties.
“This morning in Lagos, I met with Mr. Rick Swart,” he wrote. “We focused on promoting credible elections in Nigeria, ensuring they are free from interference, and fostering a space where all political parties, especially opposition parties can thrive, and contribute.”
The conversation also touched on trade, investments, and economic ties. Obi expressed hope for “more credible and transparent” Nigerian elections moving forward, calling the meeting “very productive.”
This comes amid turmoil in Nigeria’s opposition scene. Obi and ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso recently ditched the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) after clashes over zoning, party control, and internal mistrust stalled unity efforts.
Their switch has pulled in lawmakers and allies to the NDC, boosting its momentum while leaving the ADC fractured and questioning its viability.
Obi framed his exit as “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s politics, aimed at better national impact, not personal gain.
