United Nigeria Airlines has increased its minimum ticket fare to ₦200,000, blaming steep operational costs and fragile industry finances for the move.
The carrier said the rise was unavoidable as airlines can no longer continue to subsidize passengers amid worsening economic conditions. It pointed to rising expenses, shrinking cash flows, and growing debt burdens that have left operators under extreme financial strain.
Management warned that failing to adopt the ₦200,000 minimum fare could push the aviation sector toward a severe financial crisis, risking widespread service disruptions and undermining the long-term viability of airlines across the country.
“We can no longer continue to subsidize travelers with the current situation. Cashflows have run out and debts are mounting. The adjustment is inevitable and ultimately for the good of the industry and the traveling public,” the airline said.
Industry experts note that airlines have been battling soaring aviation fuel prices, foreign exchange instability, high maintenance costs, and other operational challenges that have significantly increased the cost of air travel in Nigeria.
United Nigeria Airlines, therefore, appealed to the public for understanding, stressing that the fare review is not intended to punish travelers but rather to ensure operational stability, safety, and continuity of service.
The airline maintained that difficult as the adjustment may appear, maintaining a minimum fare of N200,000 has become necessary to prevent a deeper crisis within the sector and to guarantee sustainable operations in the long term.
