A ferocious windstorm has left 800 students, including those at at CNECOF International College in Putoki, Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, staring down a bleak future for their education, especially with the 2026 WAEC exams looming.
The devastating storm, which struck on Sunday, May 3, 2026, specifically, wrecked key facilities, including the newly renovated examination hall prepped specially for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) tests.
All secondary school classroom blocks and the school’s chapel, a vital hub for spiritual and moral growth, were also completely destroyed.
The Centre for Nutrition and Education of Children Foundation (CNECOF), which runs the college, is issuing an urgent plea for intervention. “We need immediate help to save these students from an impending crisis,” said proprietor Mr. Polycarp Yusuf.
Polycarp informed our Correspondent that, “On May 3, 2026, a heavy storm struck Degri Ward in Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, causing extensive destruction to CNECOF International College Putoki, a school operating under the CNECOF Orphanage Home. The tragic incident has severely impacted this key educational institution that serves the community and beyond.
“We are therefore informing and soliciting help from the general public, government authorities, development partners, NGO’s, faith-based organizations, corporate organizations, philanthropists, international community and well-meaning individuals to help us with immediate support.
“This disaster comes at a critical time students are just one week away from sitting for the West African Senior School Council (WAEC) examination, placing their academic future at serious risk.
“For over eight years, CNECOF International College Putoki has served as a beacon of hope, providing quality education to over 800 children, including orphans and vulnerable children”, Mr. Polycarp stated.
