From Leftovers to Legend: Cristiano Ronaldo’s billionaire rise

Cristiano Ronaldo once stood outside a McDonald’s hoping for leftover burgers. Today he’s a billionaire and one of the most recognisable people on Earth.

As he takes the field for his final World Cup, here are six key steps that map his remarkable journey to the top, as compiled by BBC World Service:.

1. Start with little — and make it fuel

Ronaldo grew up in a working-class family on Madeira; his father worked as a gardener and football club kit manager, and also struggled with alcoholism.

But Ronaldo never framed it as hardship: “It was all we knew… and we were happy.”

2. Choose obsession early

He prioritised football over school. At 14, he was expelled and, soon after, chose to focus entirely on the game. Then at 15, a heart condition threatened everything. He had surgery — and was back training within days.

3. Not just talent - relentless work

Talent got Ronaldo noticed. Relentless work made him a legend. He built his career on a few simple principles: first in, last out - body, mind, repetition.

The result: 5 Ballon d’Ors. 5 Champions League titles. Hundreds of goals. Countless records.

4. Convert success into serious money

At Manchester United and Real Madrid, he became one of sport’s most valuable assets. Then came the multiplier: global endorsements. Nike, Coca-Cola, energy drinks, watches... The list goes on...

5. Build the brand — not just a profile

Ronaldo launched CR7 with a line of underwear. Now it spans fashion, fragrances, hotels, gyms - even a museum. Key move: ownership and licensing, not just sponsorship.

6. Cash in on the final chapter

Most players slow down in their 30s. Ronaldo scaled up. At 37, his Al-Nassr deal brought him around $200m a year, plus commercial agreements and bonuses - making it one of the most lucrative deals in sport.

By then, Ronaldo had already crossed the $1 billion mark in career earnings. The Saudi move only added to his fortune.
