Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, met in Kano on Thursday, June 25, 2026, for what Kwankwaso’s team described as “warm exchanges and constructive discussions.”
Saifullahi Hassan, Kwankwaso’s media aide, said the meeting occurred during Obasanjo’s official visit to the state and that Kwankwaso was joined by Aminu Gwarzo, former deputy governor of Kano and the NDC’s 2027 governorship candidate.
“His Excellency, Sen. @KwankwasoRM, PhD, FNSE, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC, last night paid a courtesy visit to elder statesman and former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, at his temporary residence in Kano,” Hassan wrote.
“Former President Obasanjo is currently in Kano on an official assignment, and the visit provided an opportunity for warm exchanges and constructive discussions.”
Obasanjo has previously been allied with Peter Obi, the NDC’s 2027 presidential candidate. Ahead of the 2023 election, Obasanjo publicly backed Obi, saying he had an advantage over then-candidates Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.
At that time Obasanjo described Obi as “a needle with thread attached to it from north and south and may not get lost. He has people who can pull his ears, if and when necessary.”
In the 2023 contest, Obi, in the result declared by INEC and which he rejected, finished third behind Atiku and eventual winner Tinubu.
