Kayinsola Ajayi settled for bronze in the men’s 100m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lifting Nigeria’s overall medal count to 11
The 21-year-old, who entered the event as favourite, crossed the line in 9.90 seconds. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme surged from a slow start to take gold in a Games-record 9.83, while Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy produced a late charge to snatch silver in 9.85.
Ajayi had earlier this year beaten Jamaica’s reigning world champion Seville Oblique twice, but that form wasn’t enough in heavy rain at Scotstoun Stadium on Tuesday, July 27.
Ajayi and Kennedy ran shoulder to shoulder through most of the race, with Kennedy appearing poised to take silver until Eseme exploded in the last 20 metres to clinch victory.
Eseme’s win continues a recent African dominance in the Commonwealth 100m title following South Africa’s Akani Simbine and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who won the event at the two previous Games.
Ajayi becomes the fourth Nigerian to medal in the Commonwealth men’s 100m, joining Olusoji Fasuba, Uchenna Emedolu and Davidson Ezinwa.
