Commonwealth Games: Nwachukwu shatters world record, lifts Nigeria to discus gold in Glasgow

Goodness Nwachukwu delivered a show-stopping finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, smashing the world record to capture gold in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus. 

The defending champion saved her biggest throw for last, launching the discus an astonishing 39.66m, more than three metres beyond her previous F42 world record, to secure the title for Team Nigeria.

Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye claimed silver with a strong 38.52m effort, while Bree Cronin took bronze after posting a season-best 36.00m.

Earlier on, Team Nigeria’s Jessica Oji added to the medal haul with silver in the women’s shot put, recording a throw of 17.87 m.

The haul helped Nigeria climb the standings: the team sits fifth on the medals table with seven golds, five silvers and two bronzes.
